There is a great introductory description of Body weight supported treadmill training with excellent references in the newest (2010) edition of the O'Sullivan and Schmitz text.  Within the chapter (8) entitled "Interventions to Improve Locomotor Skills", the authors describe the theory of whole task practice strategies in contrast to parts-to-whole  strategies; emphasize the importance of sensory input through manual guidance, facilitation, and inhibition; and underscore the safety benefits of using body weight support.  In addition, "Management Strategies" are discussed including training parameters, possible progression protocols, and progression to overground walking.  Finally, suggestions are given for clinical applications of body weight support including overground and over treadmill activities paired with functional goals.  Benefits of using body weight support are outlined, and student practice activities are given.

This chapter is a great reference for students or therapists new to the concept of body weight support.  I recommend taking a look!
