He was a trauma patient from MVA, other injuries included TBI, SAH, and C2 ligamentous instability (wearing a collar). At that time the doctors did say his spine and ribs were clear. I work in a teaching hospital so I usually take their orders with a grain of salt. And since most LiteGait instructors here said no, we did not use the LiteGait.

You haven't stated the cause for the rib and vertebrae fractures; precautions/contraindications might be consequently modified; a trauma? severe osteoporosis? bone cancer? benign bone cyst?

Unless it was a pretty straightforward trauma, my inclination might be to specifically clear use of the proposed harness set up with the MD.

Once adequate healing has taken place, using the harness should not be a problem... With ribs it could be a bit tricky, because immobilizing a rib for healing is not done well- so ends move, and the general healing time frame for most bones may not apply.  I would wait until you are told there is radiologic union, then go for it.

The official position is that rib fractures are a contraindication to the use of LiteGait.  This is because of the loading of the ribs that occurs when you provide support to the patient.  If you were to use one of the half-height harnesses that we make, then rib fractures could be seen as a precaution, because the shorter harness would not make contact with the ribs of most patients.

I know rib fracture is a contraindication for using LG, does anyone know the time frame for the duration of this contraindication? My patient has his rib fracture few weeks ago, I wonder how long it takes to start using LG. On top of rib fracture he also has 3 levels of thoracic processes fracture, but the MDs cleared him to weight bear on his thoracic and lumbar spine. Can I use LG on him?

Thanks, Doris
